Winter Hill fell race – 12 February

Second half of the weekend is the Winter Hill fell race – about 11 miles of moorland with about 2500 feet of climbing, With weary legs I stood on, or a bit behind, the start line not wishing to get trampled in the rush for the first climb. The thaw made conditions different – some places were better than yesterday others, where there was water lying on ice, were worse. I finished, unofficially, in 02:26:35 and just over a minute quicker than last year when I also ran the Amble on the previous day. This year’s route was shortened slightly because of the conditions and that is probably enough to account for the improvement but I am happy with that. There was too much drizzle and too little visibility to make it worth getting my camera out of its dry bag. The consolation is, in due course there will be a video of the race as there was a number of camera men and women around the route – I hope they shot more than I did. These are all “before” or “after”.
